Prof. Oliver M. Rui Wins 3rd Prize in Mao Lixiang Family Business Research Paper Competition

“Succession of Chinese Family Businesses” was the theme of the 9th International Symposium on Entrepreneurship and Family Business which drew more than 100 family business scholars, experts and graduate students when it was held October 17-18, 2013 in Hangzhou.

During the Symposium it was announced that a paper by CEIBS Kaifeng Centre for Family Heritage Co-director Prof. Oliver M. Rui entitled “Officer Visiting, Resource Access and Financing Restraint: An Empirical Study on Listed Chinese Family Businesses” was awarded third place in a Best Paper competition overseen by the Academic Committee of the Mao Lixiang Family Business Research Centre. Prof. Rui’s paper was among 15 chosen for final review from among the more than 60 papers that were submitted. A rigorous selection process was used to determine the winners, including a correspondence review by 16 scholars, presentations by the authors and a final review by the Academic Committee.

Management Organization Review Editor-in-Chief Prof. Anne Tsui delivered a keynote speech

As a part of this year’s symposium, Management Organization Review Editor-in-Chief Prof. Anne Tsui invited Prof. Bradley L. Kirkman, Prof. Sara Rynes, ZJU School of Management Prof. Chen Ling, Prof. Jess H. Chua, and Prof. Li Xinchun to guest edit the winning papers which will appear in a special issue of the Review focused on Chinese Family Business. While at the Symposium, the authors of the five shortlisted papers also participated in a special workshop in which their papers were discussed and suggestions for modification were given. The authors of the papers come from more than 10 countries and regions including China, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Singapore. When it is published, this special issue of the Review will be the first time a world leading academic magazine has featured English language articles on Chinese family businesses.

University of Iowa Prof. Sara Rynes gives a keynote speech

The Symposium was hosted by ZJU Global Entrepreneurship Research Centre, ZUCC Business School and ZUCC Entrepreneurship Education School, and organized jointly by Zhejiang University (“ZJU”) School of Management and Zhejiang University City College (“ZUCC”), along with ZJU Academy of Zhejiang Global Entrepreneur, the Research Centre for Chinese Family Firms at Sun Yat-Sen University, Management World magazine, and the ZUCC Entrepreneurship & Family Business Research Centre. The Discipline Construction Fund at ZJU School of Management, ZJU Fotile Foundation for Family Business Research, and the ZUCC Province-level Key Discipline (Business Management) Construction Fund sponsored the symposium. ZJU School of Management Vice President Prof. Chen Ling presided over the opening ceremony, during which ZJU School of Management President Prof. Wu Xiaobo and ZUCC President Prof. Wu Jian gave keynote speeches on behalf of the organizers.
